Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with WACAC! We have a variety of committees that reflect many practice areas to help our profession grow and succeed. Please take a moment to learn more about each committee and review their current opportunities below.

When you submit an interest form, one of our delegates will follow up with more details about your selected area(s). We look forward to collaborating with you to make the most of your membership and strengthen our organization!

Admission Practices

Activities

  • Discuss ethics-related case studies
  • Write content for WACAC blogs and social media
  • Present about Guide to Ethical Practice in College Admission updates and case studies
  • Support the new Share, Learn & Connect event being launched in Nevada

Time Commitment

  • Flexible; 1-3 hours bi-monthly

Helpful Skills

  • Passion for ethics; public speaking; open-minded; blog writing. Great opportunity for young admissions professionals!

Community College Advocacy

Activities

  • Presenting at professional development sessions, WACAC Wednesday webinars, or college fair workshops

Time Commitment

  • 2 hours per month

Helpful Skills

  • Passion about community college/transfer options; public speaking to various audiences; social media talent

Development

Activities

  • Raising awareness for Giving Tuesday and other philanthropic campaigns
  • Connecting with WACAC members by tabling at NACAC and WACAC Conferences (as well as other events)
  • Drafting and reviewing written materials and grant applications (as applicable)

Time Commitment

  • About 2 hours per month (1 hour monthly meeting + 1 hour of additional tasks)

Helpful Skills

  • Enthusiasm for WACAC and a willingness to be part of our fundraising efforts! Experience in alumni development, sales, or marketing is also useful.

Government Relations

Activities

  • The largest opportunity to be engaged is the annual California Legislative Conference in Sacramento! Members can meet with their state legislators’ offices and share relevant, impactful stories with decision-makers at the state level.
  • Volunteers also have the opportunity to attend meetings at state legislators’ field/home offices when the legislature is not in session… a more attainable way to get involved if you can’t make it to Sacramento!

Time Commitment

  • We’ll take volunteers whether it’s regular or one-time. Meetings with legislators’ offices typically take 15-30 minutes, with the annual Legislative Conference spanning a Monday and Tuesday in March.

Helpful Skills

  • All that’s required to be a great advocate is being able to bring your stories and your students’ stories to the person you’re meeting with, whether it’s your principal, school board officials, or your legislator in Sacramento or Carson City.
  • You don’t have to be the expert on public policy or government — the people you’re meeting with have people for that. The best attribute is your ability to put a name or an experience to the bill, statute, or policy being considered.
  • Let us know if you live in the Sacramento area and would like to support the CA Legislative Conference team!

Inter-Association

Activities

  • Mentorship of CCEP students
  • Participation and support with marketing, presenting, and organizing WACAC Wednesdays, Camp College, and CCEP
  • Outreach to public school counselors who don’t have as much access or knowledge about WACAC

Time Commitment

  • Variable depending on role; we will work with each counselor depending on their availability. Most areas of support would require no more than a few hours per month.

Helpful Skills

  • Strong communication skills; knowledge of Canvas; strong organization; willingness to share ideas and think outside the box

Membership

Activities

  • Supporting Special Interest Group (SIG) leaders by connecting them with new members who are interested in their SIG
  • Quarterly membership check-ins
  • Selecting members for our Spotlights in emails and social media
  • We’d also like to bring back the mentorship program, so volunteers can help us reimplement that in the future.

Time Commitment

  • Monthly to quarterly

Helpful Skills

  • Positive; ready to engage and involve others; committed to the message and power of WACAC

Nevada Interests

Activities

  • In Northern Nevada, committee members can participate in the pre-College Fair counselor breakfast.
  • In Southern Nevada, committee members can help plan and set up the new Share, Learn & Connect event.
  • We’re also looking for someone to serve as co-chair/chair-elect for 2026-2027!

Time Commitment

  • Monthly virtual meeting, plus two main events

Helpful Skills

  • Knowledge regarding higher ed in Nevada; eager to help increase committee members in the state

Professional Development

Activities

Time Commitment

  • Monthly at first, then weekly as we get closer to events

Helpful Skills

  • Organized; creative; great communicator
