While young people from low-income communities – who are disproportionately young people of color – face systemic inequities in school, in the workforce, and in life, they possess unique strengths, resilience and tremendous potential. When provided with support and resources, these young people fulfill their potential and achieve success in school, work and life.
Through a combination of mentoring and transformative experiences, Summer Search supports young people to successfully transition from adolescence into adulthood. We aim to unleash the potential of our young people while also building a toolkit for navigating and challenging systemic barriers to higher education and career opportunities.
In 2010, Summer Search launched our College Success program to support students from their transition from high school through Bachelor’s degree attainment. Over the course of the first two years of college, we provide continued mentoring and support to ensure that they are progressing academically, securing financial aid, engaging on campus, and adapting effectively. Joining the Bay Area program team, the College Success Associate will have the opportunity to advise Summer Searchers throughout their college journeys, as well as join a team of colleagues who are deeply committed to the students we serve.
Specifically, the College Success Associate will:
-Manage a caseload of 80-90 students in our College Success program, conducting 1:1 advising that results in trusting relationships and supports Summer Search students in their transition into and long-term success in college.
-Advise students on academics, financial aid and money management, engagement on campus and in the community, and career exploration, and provide access to other resources as necessary.
-Apply the Summer Search mentoring model while coaching students to navigate challenges commonly faced by first-generation, low-income college students.
-Maintain at least 2 touchpoints per semester for every student in caseload; engage more regularly with those in challenging situations and/or are seeking greater support.
-Collaborate with High School, College Access, and College Success staff to identify and address risk factors for college attrition.
-Use databases to consistently to track key data, enter case notes, and monitor progress towards multiple program goals.
-Actively contribute to the ongoing development and implementation of the College Success program through participating in organizational trainings and meetings with regional and national staff.
-Provide planning support and staffing to College Success and Bay Area Program Team events, such as the Annual Holiday Party and Dare to Lead career conference.
