Since UCSC does not host UC Counselor Conferences on its campus, the SLC is a special opportunity for counselors to visit and experience first-hand what makes UCSC so unique:
- world-class academics and research with a focus on undergraduate education and opportunities;
- a residential college system that provides a small, liberal arts college feel with the advantages of a large university;
- a 50-year history of field study, internship and experiential learning; and
- a spectacular 2000-acre campus characterized by meadows, redwood forests, and creeks – along with cutting-edge facilities for science, engineering, and the arts.
As one of the largest SLC events, the UCSC SLC offers a rich and varied program:
- sessions geared for new counselors, experienced counselors, public school counselors, independent school counselors, community college counselors, CBOs, and independent counselors;
- a college fair with representatives from public and private, in-state and out-of-state colleges and universities; and
- an optional campus tour.
Key session topics new for this year include:
- video game design – counseling students from the engineering and art/design perspectives
- admissions in Español
- computer science – what/how/where/why
- engineering for B students
- CSU’s new application.
Plus sessions addressing the latest and greatest on:
- UC and CSU updates, admissions deans and directors updates
- building a college list, financial aid, college admissions testing, applications, athletic recruiting, testing accommodations practices
- working with large caseloads, undocumented students, transfer students, international students, LD students.
Directions, Parking and Traffic
The main entrance to the UC Santa Cruz campus is located at 1156 High Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95064. You can find driving directions here.
- Enter campus at the main entrance. Follow the gold and blue welcome flags to Coolidge Dr. You will not need to stop at the visitor/parking kiosk.
- Follow the main road (Coolidge Dr.) to the second stoplight at the corner of Coolidge and Hagar Dr.
- Turn left onto Hagar Dr., and follow the road up the hill until you reach the East Remote Parking Lot, which will be on your right (Lot 104 on the UCSC Parking Map).
- Parking will be available at no additional charge. UCSC shuttles will take participants from the parking lot to the SLC venue and will run in the morning and at the end of the event until the campus tours ends. It is also possible to walk a half-mile path alongside the athletic complex and through the meadow. Please allow 15 minutes either way.
- Please plan for traffic conditions. Local campus traffic can get heavy just prior to 8:00 a.m. Coming from the south on Hwy 1, northbound commuter traffic to Hwy 17 can be heavy and slow, and afternoon southbound commuter traffic can be slow as well. Consider avoiding traffic by arriving early (or the night before) and/or staying late (see suggestions below).
Meeting Location
The SLC will be held at two of UCSC’s residential colleges, Cowell College and Stevenson College (immediately adjacent to each other). These venues will offer a close-up experience of student life within the residential colleges. The optional campus tour will showcase the campus-wide academic campus core and student services.
More on the UCSC Campus and Santa Cruz Area (ease the commute – spend the night on Monday or stay for dinner on Tuesday):
- UCSC campus: In addition to the optional campus tour of the academic core, participants may explore on their own by visiting the Baytree Bookstore, athletic facilities, the eight other residential campuses, and the many hiking and biking trails through the Upper Campus Natural Reserve. Three miles down the hill at the coast lies UCSC’s Coastal Marine Campus, which includes the Long Marine Laboratory, a center for marine science research by undergraduates, faculty and graduate students, and Seymour Discovery Center.
- Santa Cruz: Located at the top of Monterey Bay, Santa Cruz is known for its beaches, redwood forests, arts, food, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, and outdoor pursuits.
- Lodging: There is no dedicated hotel arrangement for the SLC event, but you can inquire re: possible discounts for UCSC visitors. Here are a few of Santa Cruz’s many options:
- The Dream Inn (close to campus, on the beach)
- Fairfield Inn and Suites (close to campus, near marine lab)
- Hilton Santa Cruz/Scotts Valley (farther away but convenient freeway access)
- Dining: Downtown Santa Cruz, anchored by Pacific Avenue between Laurel St. and Water St., is a local hub for independent restaurants and shops – and a favorite hangout for UCSC students. The Santa Cruz Wharf is another popular dining destination, with views of the bay and its resident sea lions, sea otters, and seabirds.
