WACAC Members:

This past summer at the National School Counselor Conference in Florida, Mrs. Obama stated a White House Initiative to support counselors!

The initiatives include:

  • The U.S. Secretary of Education released new guidance for school superintendents and principals to create budgets for school counselors and professional development for school counselors.
  • An event in July in partnership with the Harvard Graduate School of Education and ASCA to support professional development and a new national agenda for school counselors.
  • The White House will now, each year, honor a national school counselor of the year, similar to the national teacher of the year initiative.

An Action Alert to thank our US President and Mrs. Obama for their efforts to support and highlight the importance of school counselors has been set up by NACAC. Please take a minute (or less) to complete and then pass this on to your colleagues. If you were at the NACAC Conference, you might have heard about this in Indianapolis.

The President and First Lady have dedicated a great deal of time and energy to college access initiatives, and WACAC is especially grateful that they have been vocal about the role counseling professionals and others play in helping students throughout the search and transition process. This is our chance to show them our appreciation.

Thank You,
WACAC Government Relations Committee
